Living in Gastonia

What to know before you buy

Gastonia sits along I-85 west of the Catawba River. Most new communities are within a few miles of an I-85 interchange or US 321, and Uptown Charlotte is about 25-30 minutes away off-peak. Belmont, Cramerton, and the Charlotte airport area are 15-20 minutes east.

Downtown has been growing around CaroMont Health Park, the ballpark in the FUSE District, along with restaurants and breweries on Main Avenue. Crowders Mountain State Park is a short drive west, and the Schiele Museum and Rankin Lake Park are inside the city.

Gastonia is one of the lower-priced places for new construction in the Charlotte area. Townhomes start in the $240s to $270s, and many single-family communities start between the $290s and $400s. Higher-end options include Eastwood's Robinson Oaks in the $590s and Knotts Builders' Carolina North in the $700s. HOA dues in the communities we checked ran from about $35 to $210 a month.

For 2025-26, homes inside city limits pay about $1.07 per $100 of value in combined county and city tax. Some new communities with a Gastonia mailing address are outside city limits and pay the county rate plus a fire district instead, so check each address. Builder incentives and price cuts on available homes are common right now, so compare the bottom-line price.

FAQ

Buying new construction in Gastonia

What do new construction homes cost in Gastonia?

As of November 2026, new townhomes start in the $240s (LGI's Rhyne Court) and $250s to $270s (Profile's Sierra Ridge and Mattamy's Townes at Westfall). Single-family homes start in the $290s at LGI's Stagecoach Station, and most others start between the $320s and $410s. Eastwood's Founders Landing 55+ community starts in the $450s, and Knotts Builders' Carolina North starts in the $700s.

What are property taxes in Gastonia?

For 2025-26, homes inside city limits pay Gaston County's rate of 59.9 cents per $100 of value plus the City of Gastonia's 47 cents, about $1.07 per $100 in total. On a $375,000 home that is roughly $4,000 a year. Some new communities with a Gastonia mailing address are outside city limits; those pay the county rate plus a fire district rate instead of the city rate.

How long is the commute from Gastonia to Uptown Charlotte?

Off-peak, it is about 25-30 minutes via I-85, roughly 20-25 miles depending on the neighborhood. Rush-hour traffic on I-85 near the Catawba River bridge can add time.
